Instructing Tennant To Leave (Public Helpdesk Query)

I issued a tennant with a section 21 notice at the beginning of their 6 month tennancy in 2007,that agreement still stands,running on a month to month basis.They have now become unreliable and wish them to leave.Can I just write them a letter requesting they leave and do I have to give them a specific length of time to leave ?
