Manchester City councillor Manian O'Connor has been formally reprimanded by colleagues following his conviction for conspiring to defraud the housing benefit system of £8,800. The council, which has no power to sack councillors, backed a recommendation of its standards committee that a list of sanctions be imposed for having brought the council into disrepute.
Eight out of 10 tenants and former tenants questioned by the free classified advertising publication Loot said they 'generally trusted' their landlord or letting agent. The survey also found that over half of those questioned would not move into accommodation with a dirty bathroom or kitchen. And a third made their decision based on the nearness of the local off licence.
Conviction and fine of a Kentish landlord for failing to register the hotel he used to house asylum seekers as an HMO has been confirmed by Canterbury Crown Court. Ijaz Rahman had challenged the fine of £300 and costs of £2,200 imposed earlier this year, but lost the case and was ordered to pay further costs totalling £3,500.
