In brief - August / September 2001

People seeking to buy properties are more interested in suburban homes than city centre living, according to research conducted by the City and Regional Development department at Cardiff University. It found that many home movers preferred private gardens and parking to the inner-city alternative of shared facilities. Researchers also discovered that many people tend to choose a property in an area that reflects their life-style insofar as it houses other people with similar circumstances. This was preferable to living in close proximity to a diverse mix of neighbours, the sort that many inner-city developments offer.

Birmingham City Council, Europe's largest landlord, has pledged to improve the lives of its 88,000 tenants in what it calls 'the largest housing revolution in Britain'. The pledge was made on launch of an 11 strong partnership that the city hopes will eventually take over the running of local housing needs. Investment in housing will come from 'stock transfers' to these 11 organisations if both tenants and Government officials give their backing to the scheme early next year.
