'Cancer risk' with roofing felt - December 2001 / January 2002

US scientists have revealed a link between the application of roofing felt and cancer. Research conducted by the Government's National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health, NIOSH, concluded that there was sufficient evidence to show that roofing asphalt fumes are a 'potential occupational carcinogen'.

The danger was found to be in the bitumen fumes released during the application of bituminous roofing felt, according to alternative technology roofing manufacturer Liquid Plastics Limited.

A spokesperson at the firm warned that the risk was not only to those involved with the roof's application. 'Considering that thousands of flat roofs across the country are currently covered with felt, most of which will have been applied with bitumen, this is a worrying conclusion. The report has implications for architects, surveyors, facilities and maintenance managers, roofers and contractors', it said.

Felt applications also pose a fire hazard during 'torch-on and pour-and-roll' application, claimed the firm.
