More floods predicted - February / March 2001
Between 950,000 and 1.2m properties in the UK are at risk of inland flooding 4 per cent of the building stock.
The finding comes from a report by Entec UK commissioned by the Association of British Insurers.
Climate changes and increased development within or near flood plains were put down as the two main factors for increased risk. 'By the 2050s the average temperature could have increased by 2.3°C and the sea level by between 22 and 83cm', said Entec's sustainable development expert Jim Kersey.
There is now a general consensus that both inland and coastal flooding may become more frequent and severe, at the same time becoming more unpredictable, said the firm.
New planning guidance, Development and flood risk, will require planning authorities to consider flood risk when deciding on planning applications.
