Regulation killing cellular future - February / March 2001
Regulation could kill off any move towards greater use of 'cellular homes', according to the RLA.
The recent Centre for Economics and Business Research report Housing futures 2010 predicted 'greater use of rented prop erty, with the rental market growing by over 50 per cent this decade'.
Bedsits with shared facilities 'will have greater resonance in the future' when 'these cellular homes could prove attractive to footloose single people and couples, people not wanting the hassle of running and maintaining a larger property, and those who need a second home near to their place of work'.
RLA chairman Martin Moylan agreed: 'A lot of people still want to share because of the cost of living in popular areas or simply because they want the Friends lifestyle.
'The only problem is that because of the regulations involved in creating HMOs, many landlords will not consider investing in such property and the number in the market is decreasing all the time. What we would like to see is some policy introduced which will help people utilise the huge amounts of space in large Victorian or Edwardian houses'.
