Homeless increase in SW - October / November 2001

Rising rents in the South West are to blame for making it the area in the country with the biggest homeless problem outside London.

This is the view of Shelter's Bristol branch director Steve Woodcock who says more and more families are being forced to seek bed and breakfast accommodation.

'It is a reflection of the modern labour market and rising rents in cities like Bristol', he said.
