Minister announces changes to housing benefit - August / September 2002
Malcolm Wicks, the minister in charge of housing benefit, announced changes to its administration at the Institute of Revenue Ratings and Valuing Benefit Fraud symposium in Blackpool in July.
'We are', he said, 'investing millions of pounds of extra money to ensure that people get the right amount of housing benefit at the right time'.
This is the biggest investment in housing benefit administration since the scheme began in 1988'.
The £200m in question has been allocated over three years to help councils to meet performance standards which were set in April last.
Wicks hopes that this will go together with the Government's 'demanding target of cutting fraud and error in housing benefit by a quarter by 2006'.
