Do it yourself conviction - February / March 2002

A Newcastle landlord has been fined more than £2,000 with costs after admitting he had installed a gas fire in one of his properties although not qualified to do so.

Gateshead Magistrates Court heard how landlord Russell Thompson, a builder, had endangered a tenant and her baby daughter in one of his 25 rented properties. An inspection of the fire had found it to be leaking gas.

Thompson admitted he had also connected a boiler to the gas supply, linking plastic piping to copper piping, which is prohibited and had resulted in a faulty joint.
