HMO failure brings fine - June / July 2002

A local authority has warned landlords that it will 'vigorously enforce' a registration scheme set up for houses in multiple occupation.

'We have a proactive inspection programme for all HMOs', explained Westminster's acting assistant housing director after the council's successful prosecution of Denbigh Estates.

Westminster Council had brought the case claiming a number of offences, including failure to fix a broken electrical switch, failure to carry out repairs to a shared bathroom and non-compliance with a council notice ordering urgent repairs to windows and bedsits.

The firm was fined a total of £5,000, £1,000 of which was for failure to register the house under the council's House in Multiple Occupancy Scheme.
