'Liar' landlord condemned - June / July 2002
Lies to a fatal accident inquiry have landed Glasgow landlord Harpal Singh in jail.
Singh had told the inquiry into the deaths of two young students at one of his properties that there had been a working smoke alarm in their basement bedsit. But fire inspectors and members of the victims' families refuted his claims.
When sentencing Singh to two and a half years in jail, Sheriff Kenneth Maciver said his lies had 'unnecessarily drawn out the suffering of the families of the former school friends'.
Singh had been warned a number of times not to lie to the inquiry. But, said the Sheriff, the number of times he had claimed that the flat had a working smoke alarm 'must have run into double figures', even though fire investigators had found overwhelming evidence to the contrary.
