Tax fiddle landlords jailed - June / July 2002
Three landlords have been jailed and ordered to have assets confiscated or pay compensation and fines totaling approximately twice the amount of their admitted tax evasion.
Francis Jenn and Patricia Jenkins from London SW6, and Carol Hajas from New Malden, had purchased more than 70 properties in London and Kent, most of which were let out.
But they had 'put up a smokescreen' to conceal their ownership and income and had 'not paid a single penny' on rental income received over a period of 15 years. The three had used over 65 different bank and building society accounts to bank their rents, some in false names, and had transferred properties between themselves so as to conceal their letting activities.
Kingston Crown Court, where the three all pleaded guilty, put the loss to the Revenue at just over £960,000.
Jenn was jailed for two years for evading income tax and nine months concurrent on charges relating to capital gains tax. He was ordered to pay compensation of £350,000 and fined £483,000 a total of £833,000. Jenkins and Hajas, who did not enter a plea of guilty until the day the trial began, were each jailed for 30 months and had confiscation orders of £833,000 made against them.
