House prices continue to climb - August / September 2003
Average house prices continued their rise in the second quarter of 2003, coming in at over 12 per cent higher than the same quarter last year, the Land Registry has reported.
Its figures, based on completed sales, put the average price of houses in England and Wales at £150,000 £236,000 for detached houses, £135,500 semi detached properties, £101,000 for terraced houses, and £143,500 for flats and maisonettes.
There were of course regional differences, with London, the South East, South West and West Midlands heading the table. Least expensive areas were Wales, Yorkshire and Humberside and East Midlands.
Despite the continued year on year increase in prices, property transactions were down, at 245,500 sales compared with 293,000 in the same quarter last year. All areas were affected, although London and the South East recorded the greatest drop in transactions.
