Mould warning - October / November 2003
An increasingly prevalent strain of mould can cause cold-like symptoms, rashes, aggravated asthma, and possibly pulmonary hemosiderosis in children, the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors has warned.
Stachybotrys Chartarum, to be found in damp walls and ceilings, is a greenish- black mould that grows on materials with high cellulose content, such as timber, dry linings and ceiling tiles.
Toxic mould is estimated to affect well over 3m UK homes. In the USA it has figured in a number of court cases. One resulted in a US landlord having to pay over $1m for failing to take corrective action that would have prevented two women suffering asthma attacks.
