Landlord training - April / May 2004
A surge in the number of private landlords in the borough has led Walthamstow council to team up with the RLA to stage training sessions in a bid to improve housing standards.
More than 40 landlords attended two initial training days that focused on the laws on owning and renting property, including tenancy agreements, contracts, deposits and the Landlords and Tenancy Act.
Councillor Loretta Hodges, Walthamstow cabinet member for housing, said that with the number of first time buyers falling away in London but the pool of traditional social housing decreasing 'it is important that we consider alternative accommodation options'.
The private sector is a valuable resource and the council was working more closely with landlords, she said. 'By doing so we can help them with laws and regulations, which can be difficult to understand, helping maintain good housing standards in the borough'.
