Norwich launches empty homes scheme - June / July 2004
Norwich City Council has joined with Orwell Housing Association and the Eastern Landlords Association to encourage landlords to rent empty properties to people who would otherwise be declared homeless.
Under the scheme Orwell will pay landlords rent, taking on responsibility for finding suitable tenants.
With some 17,000 of its own, but a housing waiting list of over 3,000, the initiative is one of the many ways the council is trying to bring more housing into the social sector, it explained.
'This scheme is really suitable for the private landlord who doesn't want the hassle of having to deal with the property themselves. The housing association does all the hard work, including finding the tenants and carrying out any repairs, so it suits everybody' Norwich City Council housing executive Hereward Cooke told a local newspaper.
