Cambridge flats most costly - October / November 2004
Cambridge has the highest priced apartments when measured in cost per square metre.
London ranked second in the apartment price table, followed by Bristol, Manchester, Belfast and Edinburgh. Wrexham and Lincoln had the lowest priced apartments.
These details are among nearly 250 sets of data on topics ranging from crime to climate compiled about cities as part of the Eurostat Urban Audit. Published by the Office for National Statistics, the information is now available at www.statistics.gov.uk/urbanaudit.
Of the 24 UK cities covered (Belfast, Birmingham, Bradford, Bristol, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds, Leicester, Liverpool, London, Manchester, Newcastle, Sheffield, Aberdeen, Cambridge, Derry, Exeter, Gravesham, Lincoln, Portsmouth, Stevenage, Worcester and Wrexham), Derry had the lowest priced housing per square metre.
As well as having the most highly priced apartments, Cambridge also had the highest proportion of people living in private rented accommodation (22.9 per cent), followed by inner London (22.3 per cent), Manchester (18.8 per cent), London (17.3 per cent) and Portsmouth (16.7 per cent). Only 5.8 per cent of people in Stevenage live in private rented housing.
Bradford had the highest occupancy per dwelling, averaging 2.6, followed by Gravesham (2.5 ), Leicester (2.5), and Birmingham (2.5). Cambridge had the lowest occupancy per dwelling.
Manchester came out as the most polluted city, followed by Glasgow and Bradford. But Belfast had the most murders and violent deaths per 1,000 population, although Wrexham, Cambridge and Manchester were ranked second, third and fourth.
