Irish landlords must register - October / November 2004
Republic of Ireland landlords must now register with the new Private Residential Tenancies Board.
The change is one of a number introduced by the Residential Tenancies Act, much of which has just become effective.
Other changes include four-yearly tenancy cycles, new tenancy termination procedures, including longer notice periods linked to length of tenancy, and establishment of the Private Residential Tenancies Board (PRTB). There will also be a new system of tenancy registration with the PRTB, voluntary renunciation of the right to long occupation equity leases, higher penalties for offences relating to standards and registration of private rented accommodation.
'Landlords must now register with the PRTB', confirmed Housing Minister Noel Ahern. 'There will be significant benefits in doing so and strong sanctions for non-compliance'.
In future once a tenancy has lasted six months, it can only be terminated on specified grounds and by notice under the Act.
