Town is new chairman of RLA - July / August 2005
LEEDS LANDLORD Chris Town has become chairman of the Residential Landlords Association, taking over from Alan Ward.
With months to go before the implementation of the Government's new Housing Act, Town takes over at a pivotal time.
He said: "With Government legislation forcing so many changes, it’s going to be one of the most challenging periods that most landlords in the country have ever faced."
A Leeds landlord, Town was born and raised in Pudsey and originally trained as an electrician. He then became a partner in an electronics business before he went into property - initially by converting a terrace house into flats.
The partnership, CJ Properties, which he runs with his wife Susan, has a portfolio of 28 single and multi-let houses and flats in the city. They are currently starting the conversion of a Victorian detached property in Crossgates, formerly a dental surgery, into five apartments.
CJ Properties expanded in the late ’90s, and seven years ago Town became the founding chairman of the South Leeds Landlords Association - "because landlords did not have a voice to represent their views".
In 2000 it became part of the RLA and Town became a director.
He said: "Our mission has always been to provide the training and support that enables landlords to become better informed and more professional - which benefits tenants too.
"Landlords who don’t understand how to manage a tenancy can be a danger to themselves as well as to the people who rent from them - but our courses are recognised by many local authorities around the country for encouraging the professional development of private sector landlords."
