City's central role - April / May 1999
Manchester is leading the way with a resurgence in city centre living, according to the Government's regeneration agency, English Partnerships.
A survey conducted on its behalf by DTZ Pieda Consulting estimated that 5,000 people now live in Manchester city centre, and that the figure is growing at the rate of 25 per cent per annum.
Most are single males, most often aged between 20 and 29, living in private flats or apartments with 42 per cent earning £20,000 or more. Although 60 per cent also work in the city centre, a third commute out of the city each day.
Manchester is not the only city to see an increase in city centre dwellers. Birmingham, Leeds, Nottingham and Newcastle are among those also experiencing the phenomenon.
