A former Manchester estate agent is behind CARL, a 'full lettings and management package' that includes tenant application forms, guarantor statements, reference forms, agreements and accounts and accounts management systems. Information Property Systems has launched a paper based Go-it-alone landlord's kit. Costing £175, it is claimed to provide 'all the tools and information necessary to enable landlords to by-pass letting agents'. Details from IPS on 07071 227 027.

Cambridge University students are up in arms about its plans to hike the cost of student accommodation by up to 60 per cent over the next six years. The Bursars Committee made the recommendation to bring weekly rents up to the private sector level, which has already caused King's College to put up weekly room rates by £4 to £44.

Deputy chief executive of Manchester County Council Steve Maycio has been included among a panel of housing professionals and academics appointed by Housing Minister Nick Raynsford to act as an informal 'sounding board' for Government housing policy.
