Hi tech future on one level - December 1999 / January 2000

Hi tech security systems are the home improvement most likely to add value to a property in 25 years time.

So said a sample of just under 2,000 people questioned by pollsters MORI for the Alliance & Leicester.

Solar panels, built-in audio-visual systems and domestic appliances were also nominated as improvements likely to add value. Preservation of historic features and installation of classic fittings were thought less worthwhile although almost one in ten people thought a nuclear shelter a good bet, and one in 20 Londoners believed a garden gnome would be a good investment.

A quarter of those questioned said their ideal home would be a bungalow. Only 2 per cent favoured an inter-war semi-detached house, and only 1 per cent a terraced house.
