My local council have now decided that my maisonette, which is only occupied by two people, is an HMO for council tax purposes. This would be (relatively) OK, but they have backdated my responsibility two years. My tenant is more than happy to pay, and has not accessed the refund for previous years that they have made available to him, and is continuing to pay council tax, albeit into a closed account!
I have had a long and tortuous email correspondance with the council, but they are not being helpful. It seems silly for this to have to go to court. Has anyone had similar experiences? What should my next step be?
