We'd appreciate your help with the following:

We have an incumbant tenant who surrendered his tenancy recently and we note there is an outstanding rent due of around 500.

When we bought the property in April 07, the vendor declared the tenant gave a deposit of 200 which was passed to us accordingly upon completion. The tenant however, claims he paid the vendor 250 deposit, and appears to have the paperwork to prove it.

In addition, it is clear the tenant has paid the previous landlord rent for the initial month, April - May 07, when we took over.

The tenant seems to think we need to argue with the vendor about this, despite the fact that all tenants were advised we were the new landlords from April 12th and all rent should now be made payable to us.

Can we bill the tenant for the amount outstanding and inform him that he needs to approach the vendor/previous landlord for overpayment of rent and deposit?
