Rent in Advance

I know that the old RLA AST method of taking two months rent in advance - and then continuing with monthly rent payments - is now seen as a deposit. However what happens if you agree a normal monthly AST and the tenant then wants to pay the six months in advance either straight away or just pays into our bank account at a later date and then makes no further payment as he is in advance? Is it any different to him being in arrears.
