My student daughter lives in a shared house. Recently, her bedroom ceiling fell in causing rubble and other dirt to cover her bedclothes and possessions and generally make the room unuseable.

The ceiling has now been repaired, and she wants compensation for the cost of damage and dirt to her things and the cleaning of her room. The landlord is not willing to meet her claim.

What are her rights in this case?

As a landlord myself, I would have rectified the situation immediately had it been one of my properties.
