Which S21 to issue?

Couple of questions I'm looking for advice on, but first I'll give a bit of background info.

Used the RLA Assured Shorthold TA for tenants that moved in at the end of last year. The six month fixed term ran from 22 Oct 14 to 22 Apr 15. Rent was agreed to be paid on the 28th of each month. The fixed period has come to an end and so now have reverted to the statutory periodic tenancy. I wish to end the tenancy so am looking to issue a S21. The two questions are:

1 - Can I use the S21(1) for this IAW the Spencer v Taylor case?

2 - If so (and 2 months notice is given) do I just calculate the amount due on their final month by working out the daily cost of the rental and multiplying that by the number of days? As they will not be leaving exactly at the end of a full month.

2 - What date should the S21 be for, the 22nd or the 28th of the month?
