Section 21 or section 8?

Hi all!,

This has probably been answered many times, but do i serve a section 8 to serve notice and claim unpaid rent after the term of the AST has expired so is now periodic? Or will it have to be a section 21 notice?
its not very clear from many sources but heres one:

section 21 notice for eviction after a fixed term has ended
section 8 notice for eviction at any time, including during any fixed term
