Help please. I had two tenants in my flat who paid their rent for the first month and then nothing for the next seven months ! resulting in the bailiffs having to get them out. Now to top things off my local council are saying that I have to pay the council tax for that period as they didn't pay it. The council tell me because they had no recourse to public funds under Section 95 of the immigration and Asylum Act 1999 then I am liable for it. My argument is
- Once they have signed the tenancy that clearly states they are responsible for all bills.
- Why didn't they chase the tenants when they were living at the property in question.
Any landlords been in the position ? any advice would be appreciated.
