My tenants have been in for two years now and I have always paid the electricty &gas bills. I decided in August 07 that instead of putting the rent up I would ask them to pay the electic bill and to that end informed them that I had taken my name off the electric account. Unfortunataly this was not in writing but they did acknowledge this in an email. Now a huge electric bill has arrived (the first since last Aug) and tenants are refusing to pay it and denying all knowledge of our agreement.

I understand that the criteria for increase of rent etc has to be with the agreement of the tenant BUT unless I can sort this out ASAP I am left with a huge bill for the last 8 months.

Apart from simply asking them to leave and writing off the electric bills what alternatives are there please?
