We have a delicate issue. One of our tenants from our HMO was recently found deceased. The relatives who attended on the same day kept the keys for a few weeks with a view to clearing and sorting through affairs. We had no issue with this. However, since handing the keys back, they are demanding the deposit be returned to them.
I have several delicate queries;
- There were sufficient belongings left behind to warrant several trips to the tip. Ordinarily, I would charge for this.
- As the deceased had been in situ for several days, we had a larger than average cleaning cost, and to completely remove all associated odour etc, we decided to completely redecorate and renew all the original contents.
Have I the right to still deduct these costs?
