Council Tax Summons

My tenant moved out in August 2017. The council sent me a council tax bill shortly after and I must admit that I wasn't aware that council tax was payable immediately on empty properties. So thinking it was an admin error I ignored it. A reminder letter came so I paid the required invoiced amount of £174. I have now received a court summons for an amount of £519. This is probably the amount payable to the end of the year, but my new tenants moved in in December, so the amount actually payable for the void is around £350 and I have paid £174 of it. So how do I handle this summons?
