Students and council tax
We have a six bed HMO (4 bathrooms, good facilities) let to students. The Council want to charge council tax for the holiday period when 2 of the students stayed in their rooms. They
also say if a student moves in days before the term starts council tax must be paid then.
One staff member says we do not need to pay council tax as long as some of the rooms are occupied by students in this student only house, while another staff member says council tax must be paid on the whole house unless six students are in residence.
It is very confusing. Do you know what the rules really are?
Of course we would like to rent all the rooms all the time but this is clearly not possible
as we have to maintain the property to a high standard during the holidays for instance.
