When tenants leave a property for whatever reason, mail will probably still be delivered to the property in the former tenants’ names. Landlords (or agents) are not entitled to retain post which is not addressed to themselves. Landlords should either re-address the mail with the tenants’ forwarding address, and re-post it, or preferring not to be used as a postal forwarding service, may mark it ‘gone away’ and re-post it. It is preferable if tenants, when they leave your rented property, arrange with the post office for the mail to be re-directed – they will have to pay a small fee – and it is good practice for landlords to advise them to do this. Having mail re-directed helps to prevent the growing crime of ID fraud.
