dispute over tenants' gas bill
I found a replacement,
advised the existing foursome to settle up the bills amongst themselves,
drew up a new agreement for the new foursome,
checked the inventory with the departing tenant,
collected her keys and said goodbye.
When I returned the departing tenant's deposit she left it in the house in an envelope which she said was to cover the bills. None of the other tenants were around at her moving out time.
Now the remaining three tenants tell me that the departing tenant's deposit money was originally borrowed from one of them anyway so effectively nothing had been left for the bills. They don't wish to or intend to pay somebody else's share of a £553 gas bill.
They seem to want me to do something about it - but I don't see that there is anything I can do, anymore than they could, to recover the debt from their friend. However, I am worried that they might end up getting themselves cut off, or that the fall out might cause some trouble for my new tenant.
Any suggestions welcomed.
