Section 21 expiry

Once a 6 month contract has come to an end and the date of expiry of the section 21 (signed at the beginning of this tenancy) has come and gone is it best to sign a new contract and issue a new section 21? Or, since I believe you can then automatically enter into a 'monthly contractural tenancy' would this not be the better option as you can then issue a section 21 at any point from then on and not have to wait another maximum 6 months to the end of the second contract? Or is there something I am missing somewhere?
