I have recently increased the rent of my property up by around 25%, to my knowledge i am allowed to do this over a yearly period. My tenant is currently paying us by housing benefit - which the council pays directly to us. He is unable to get any more help with the rent and is now taking this to the rent tribunal, trying to state the house is in a very bad way and that we are "ripping him off". My questions are, what would you class as an 'unfit to live in' property? and what is the most we can increase his rent? Bare in mind that it is a joint tenancy so he only pays half!
advice would be great
