Agent screwed up

This one is for a friend of mine (an embarrased friend).

His agent checked a tenant into his property without taking a deposit or the first months rent. The tenant has not yet paid these and is now in the 2nd month of the tenancy. She has paid the 2nd month rent so she is effectively a deposit and 1 month in arrears.

My friend is nervous that the tenant will not pay the arrears or deposit and that she may default in future.

Other than sue his agent, what options does he have? He would prefer to end the tenancy as soon as possible but the tenant signed a 6 month AST. Can he ask her to leave earlier? Could he go for possession on the grounds of unpaid rent, even though she is not 2 months in arrears? what is the most expedient way? Any other options?
