I bought a property that we are refurbishing now and I have had it about four months.

The property was empty when I got it but not sure how long before.

I sent an email to the council to let the know I own the property for council tax reasons but I only just sent that.

They then posted me a letter to state that I had already had a summons against me based on mail sent direct to the house which I had not seen (I have been working away and the workmen there were clearing mail up).

Should I pay this or just pay the basic amount that I owe.

I have also asked them to clarify from when the property was empty so I know that I should pay the full amount as it needs to have been empty for 6 months before council tax is due in that council area.
